To put it simply, in my opinion, Mastodon is the new Metallica. Both bands came from humble beginnings, their debut albums, Remission and Kill 'Em All respectively, both excellent with killer riffage and innovative songwriting, though somewhat esoteric for their time. These two artists on the verge were critically acclaimed for both the content of their work and the creativity they exercised, but were little more than cult acts at the time. The true potential of both bands, however, would be realized with the release of their next two albums. Mastodon captivated metal-heads and critics alike with its beautifully artful approach to progressive metal in Leviathan and then Blood Mountain, both considered modern metallic masterpieces, in a similar way that Metallica immortalized themselves with their stunning performances on Ride The Lightning and Master of Puppets. It would only be a matter of time before both bands reached mainstream acknowledgement. Metallica's next album ...And Justice For All featured the band's first true break-through single, One, acquainting the entire world with the notorious Metal Militia. Mastodon in a similar manner recently released the video for their single Oblivion, a song that was, by itself entrancingly sublime. This thought-inspiring video brought a new depth to the song and is easily the best video single of the year, if not the decade. Regardless, Mastodon has risen from the darkness to become a force to be reckoned with, a tastefully crushing metal act that is scarcely unrecognized anymore, just as Metallica was 20 years ago. At this rate, it is not only possible, but entirely probable that Mastodon will end up in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame alongside their tour mates Metallica.

"Crack the Skye" is monumental and historical. A Borglum-esque creation for the centuries.
